Who was John Hammond?
John Hammond at nine years of age, John Hammond worked in a marble polishing factory. Nobody knew that he would become a painter of oceans, fields and mountains for more than 70 years. In 1891, Sir‑William Van Horne, President of Canadian Pacific Railway, commissioned the best landscape artists in the country to immortalize the villages, hills and snowy peaks along the railway. The paintings were hung in hotel lobbies and train stations, just like billboards are now erected along our highways. In the 1930s, John Hammond was invited by Power Corporation, one of the many occupants of the Merchants Bank building, to paint eight great murals of hydroelectric plants. These majestic paintings have been restored and are now part of Hotel Le St-James' décor.

Situated on the 11th floor, the Presidential Salon is a sumptuous dining room adjacent to the Presidential Suite.
